My new NAT Virtual Machine by NanoKVM

Hello,

this is my first post in 2023 and I get my first free VPS of life*. a NAT KVM by NanoKVM ๐Ÿ‘ป

You can also get it free by requesting it by going to: https://nanokvm.net placing a request and posting the token on lowendtalk.

The requirements to get one

- Existing account since 3 months, on Lowendtalk
- Active account (you need to have a decent amount of recent posts)
- You need to have 50 posts before you apply

So, in order to get this NAT VPS you need to be active on lowendtalk, lowendspirit, or hostedtalk forums.

NanoKVM is a community driven Project founded in 2018 which provides NAT KVM's to projects. If you are a Member of Lowendtalk, Lowendspirit or Hostedtalk you can apply if you meet the Requirements.

What specifications?

  • 1x Virtual Core (Shared)
  • 1024MB RAM
  • 10GB HDD/SSD/NVMe
  • 20x forwarded Ports v4
  • 80/443 port with haproxy
  • 150Mbit Uplink (Fair Use)

There are three dedicated servers with different location options right now, Sandefjord, Fremont, Eygelshoven, and CDA Idaho. I choose the Fremont one, seems great for regular daily use.

Fremont (IntoVPS)

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1230 v3 @ 3.30GHz
32GB DDR3
4x 500GB HDD (SW Raid 10)
Fremont, California

Question and Answer

โ“
Question: What is exactly NAT VM or NAT VPS?

Answer: NAT stands for Network Address Translation. It's a way to map multiple local private addresses to a public one before transferring the information (source). NAT VM or NAT VPS is the same virtual machine or virtual private server that you guys already know, but the difference is they are using 1 shared IP public address. If a dedicated server has only 1 IP Public address, the only way to connect virtual machines inside it to the Internet is through NAT.

Question: What is the difference between NAT VM / NAT VPS and regular VPS

Answer: NAT VPS and regular VPS basically the same virtual machine, in this case NanoKVM provides KVM (Qemu), the difference is NAT VPS only has a limited port number available. NanoKVM only provides 20 ports.

Meaning, for example, you can access ssh on the port given by the instruction, like port 6090. NAT VPS price is usually cheaper than regular VPS because we don't have to pay the IPv4 price per month.

Question: Can I access my domain on standard HTTP (Port 80) and HTTPS (Port 443) rather than the given port?

Answer: Sure, in this case, NanoKVM provides HAProxy, so you can access your domain with standard HTTP and HTTPS ports (read: Install the LEMP, Install Securely Wordpress in NAT VPS).

YABS Benchmark

As usual, the first step after receiving the VPS is to check the benchmark with YABS

root@NanoKVM:~# curl -sL yabs.sh | bash

For now, I don't have time to install anything, maybe next I will try to install anything with this.

/* update 12/02/2023

I've made several posts about NanoKVM's NAT KVM

Also, don't forget to say thanks to Neoon and his sponsors!

See ya!
